I have staked out the garage footprint, called 1-800 dig rite and did some calling around. To rent a mini backhoe for a day in my area, Hannibal Mo. it would cost 250 dollars a day plus tax and ins to dig my own footing. I called a local backhoe operator and he charges $2.00 a foot. My garage is going to be 34x30. (34+34+30+30) That works out to be 128 running feet x 2 = $256.00. Of course it’s a no brainier, I am going to have it dug by the backhoe operator and sit back and enjoy. My question is what is normal amount to spend for this type of work in your area.

Side note because the garage will be set back into a hill 6 foot which will be about 38 inches on the back side it will be a far amount of spoil. I have a JD4110 20 horse with bucket. While I wait for the backhoe I am going to get a head start to cut down on the 75 an hour charge for that part of the work. I dug out about 8 feet along the back wall tonight in about 20 minutes. What do you think about this.

I am also the guy that posted about the garage ratio here too.

Thanks

Roger

Here in my area of East Texas, the concrete contractor digs the footings after he's set the forms. He also installs the rebar.

Price is per square foot and has gone up some since I built my last home. Two years ago it was $2.50 a square foot including all materials. I heard it went up to $3 a foot last year with the increase in the price of rebar.

Just guessing, I'd say it's even more today.

Are you acting as General Contractor? It's unusual to have different people working on your slab. If this is so, does your cement guy know that you have hired out the digging of the footings? Is there a code in your area that you have to build to? Inspectors?

good question, two part answer. I guess you could say I am General Contractor, in as much my bother in law and I are trading labor and he does this for a living. Around here things work both ways some guys do the digging and concrete work and others just the digging. In this case this man does just the digging. The rest is up to us.

Yes we have the run of the mill boca codes and inspectors, I know them all real well and they are great to work with and with the brother in -laws help we will meet or exceeds the codes. I just finished 5 days hard labor on the bother in-law gargae so now it is my turn. i will have to pay for his bother to help set the walls and work with the rafters other than that is all in my hands.

but this is what I live for, big projects that enhance my home and makes my family home a better place.

Thanks for you info

Roger.
