To me it would seem the OP has narrowed his choice down to what will suit his needs best. Fully discuss with the dealer your anticipated attachments and what has to be done to accommodate them.

For the OP skid steers or excavators would only meet a few of his needs. The skid steer would work well in the gravel pit. The excavator digs well but does not have the mobility required.

Construction grade equipment is always a good choice.

Agreed.
FYI Jeff, here is how your post looks for me in the TBN app (I use night mode so the background is dark so that it uses less battery):

Thanks for the replies everyone! My local dealer has a L47 in stock, which after reading the replies here may suit my needs adequately. They also rent equipment and will apply rental cost towards the purchase of a new unit. So I am going to rent a machine next week and see what I like

As someone who knows very little about tractors and heavy equipment, I wish there was a tractors for dummies buying service.

I thought that is precisely what TBN was?!?!?

At least it was for me. I spent a LONG time reading and learning before making my first tractor purchase. When I started, I had no idea what PTO stood for. There is a wealth of knowledge here. Listen and heed the advice of others and you will be in good hands.

And, enjoy it! Tractor researching, buying, and operating is good fun.

Be aware that with a backhoe the maximum depth is a lot more than the dipper length. Dipper depth is where the best digging is.
