We have during the month of July, August and September a lot of festivals back to back every weekend. This is a major money maker for groups and organizations in our area. It also brings in revenue for business. Enjoy the images. I had a lot of fun attending.

The images of the oxen are from our annual farm exhibition. The ox pulls represent a long standing pull between the USA and Canada. We alternate pulling styles... when the US is in our country we pull their way and you usually when...but when we venture south and pull our way we bring home a few trophies...

Support you local fairs please... it keeps our rural way of life alive!

Lloyd

PS: I like the USA(Maine) breed of oxen... I call them the 4x4 of oxen. High off the ground with great clearance for winter work in the woods. They retain the European style of yoke where as we changed to head gear a few hundred years back. The oxen were pulling 5300lbs for distance - American style. We usually pull distance plus weight - sometimes getting up to 10000lbs+.

Bridgewater exhibition. Lunenburg used to have one years ago but gave up.

A lot of fun. I would love to have a team but my wife will not allow them in her horse barn... even though I have a wooden head/horn yoke mounted above the tack room door...!!!

We also enjoy small town fairs. A lot in Texas are in the spring because its just to durn hot in the summer. The only summer one that comes to mind is the Luling Watermellon festival held in late June every year.

Ahh, thought so , looked familiar. Beautiful country down that way.

Ive eaten at the Grandbanker and rum runners a few times when passing thru. Close to where a few of those pics were taken. Good food and great scenery but a little too packed with tourists for me in the summer .

A few pics from Lunenberg

There are lots of small festivals in towns around here that seem to be associated with crops coming in. Everything from peach festivals to watermelon festivals are common. I still think there are a few peanut festivals around. Grapefest in Grapevine, Tx is one of the better ones with lots of vendors and organized presentations. In early September, many counties start having their county fairs in preparation for the State Fair of Texas in late September and early October. Oklahoma's State Fair is in mid-September and It's a nice fair at the Oklahoma City Fairgrounds. Fairs and festivals are really a good place to go and see arts, crafts, foods, and livestock. It's a heck of a lot of walking, but worth it.

In February when Canada is covered in snow (and most of the northern US), we have the Stock Show in Fort Worth, TX. The weather can be bad, but most years it's very pleasant. It's the last show before the farmers have to get busy with planting spring crops. We don't have any shortage of opportunities to spend money and stuff our faces with fried food treats.:)

In our area October and then September are the main festival months. We have many such as the Catfish festival, Oyster festival, Alligator festival, Gumbo festival and so on.

We have a small country festival in Loranger called Old Farmers Day where they have horse and mule pulls. And even an old tractor festival outside Thibodeaux.

tally,

I am truly liking the sounds of the catfish and oyster festivals. Alligator would be right p there too so long as I didn't have to land it! Gumbo is making me salivate as I write.

jinman - I have cut way back to zero on the fried food - but it is tempting. I took my little guy to lunch today and managed to sneak a few fries from him when he wasn't looking!

Just keeping it local we have the Poteet Strawberry Festival in Poteet in April, Fiddlin' Frenchy Burke Music Festival in Lytle in May , Pleasanton Cowboy Homecoming in Pleasanton in Aug, Atascosa and Medina county fairs in Sept-Oct, Junior livestock shows in Jan., and the San Antonio Stock Show and Rodeo in Feb. So much fun so little time, but I try.
