Do any of you belong to CAS (cowboy action shooting) or SASS (single action shooting society) ? I would like to know what the more popular brand of pistols and rifles that are used and the caliber. I have been shooting 45 colts in my Taurus and like that caliber. I have a dealer close to me that sells Uberti replicas. Are they worth the money? Someday I may look into joining one of the clubs and want to be sure I have the proper guns so I don't have to purchase a second set. The closest CAS or SASS club is 2 hours away and I am not that interested yet.

Tiller, it has been years but there was a member on the forum that was very active in the cowboy action shooting. My old mind can not remember his name, sorry. I do remember him talking about his guns and the competitions so a search may well get you some info.

I spent lots of money on that several years ago, then wife, kids, mortgage got in the way.
You will see a lot of Ubertis out there (I still have my set, in .45LC) and I have a Uberti '66 in 45LC. If you like that caliber go for it. But I will warn you, most of the really fast folks are using Ruger pistols (w/ lots of work done on them) and Marlin rifles in .38 to cut down on the recoil. You can still be fast w/ the .45 but it will take some practice. I have literally thousands of rounds downrange w/ my Ubertis and never had a failure. The loads are light enough they really don't stress the guns much.
As far as purchasing before you join, don't let that stop you. SASS folks are some of nicest people I have ever come across. I shot 3 matches before I owned anything. And the firearms won't be the expensive part if you really get into it. You should have heard my wife when I came home w/ my custom built double drop twogun holster rig. You will have lots of money tied up in firearms and leather, but you will have a blast.

Also bear in mind that this information, while first hand, is a few years old. I haven't kept up w/ what the "in" rifle and pistol set is now, but I bet it is still hard to beat the Marlin rifle and Ruger Vaquero pistol.
