I am still chasing oil leaks. I have always wondered why this place is wet with oil, I assumed it was being thrown up somewhere else. Boy am i wrong...

This crack is on the inside of the oil tank at the frame (above the Left (drivers) side hoses).

First photo is top down
Second photo is on the inside...

So, how do I fix this? If I weld this, do I need to drain the oil? JB weld? Gasket Seal?

Will call Terry tomorrow to get his 2 cents...

Have Terry take a look at the pictures. Something looks non-stock to me, but I'd have to compare to the other side or another machine. Cleaning the inside if you can reach it - acetone scrub and then JB weld would probably work. I've used it to repair a hole in an engine block with good results.

I beleive that I would show Terry the pictures also as Charlie suggested. If there was a reputable welding hydroulic shop I would also consider seeing if they could weld it for me. I wouldn't do this job unless I was a really proficient welder. A long time ago I went on a job with a welder to weld a hydroulic tank, but it has been about 25 years ago so the memory is not real fresh as you could imagine. But as well as I can remember we were able to take the tank out of the peice of equipment which on the pt you can't. If I remember right seems like we drained all the oil out and filled with water but as I said that was a long tome ago. I don't remember how we cleaned the tank back out but I'll ponder on it some. I sure hope you can get it fixed without too much trouble let us know how you fix it.

I'd like to also mention that the oil tank adds structural strenght to the tub I beleive so you might want to consider that.

Well that sucks. :( There is no way to properly weld it with the oil still in it. The oil would need to be drained and the crack then cleaned so you could get a good weld. If there is oil present when it is welded it will contaminate the weld and could crack again later.

I would certainly follow the advice of all the members, to have a knowledgable craftsman make the repair for you.
From your photographs I would venture to say, that what you are looking at is
an unsuccessful attempt, at repairing the problem when it first happened.
Our fantastic welder at the vocational school at which I used to work, had one sign for all his students to observe.
Do it once, do it right.
All the best. Bill

Yeah, got off the phone with Terry. Welding is on the list.

He felt that the oil did not need to be drained. But Diesel has a point. I really only want to have this done once.

Bummer, but no life and death...

took some pictures to the local welding shop. They say plan on $600 to $800 for the fix if it is complicated. $200 if it is simple.

Ouch.

Got another welding/fabrication shop within a reasonable distance? Those prices sound quite excessive to me. If you take care of draining the oil out of the reservoir and cleaning it to OCD standards before refilling, I can't see how the welding & grinding should take more than an hour. It seems to me that an hour should even cover some additional reinforcement if needed.

Of course, there may be more to it than I'm seeing in the photos...

Frankly, I am seriously considering doing it myself. My cousin in law is a licenesed underwater welder among many things. I think I am going to have him come down and knock it out.

Because it is oil, and is above the level of the oil, everyone has said I do not and should not drain the tank.

I am going to hit it with a grinder this week so see if I can figure out how extensive the cracking really is.
