Craftsman rear tine tiller tranny grinding

I have an older (1989) craftsman rear tine tiller, model # 917.299651 5 hp 17". The tiller still functions but in forward or reverse or with the tines engaged the tranny makes a horrible grinding noise. I can still operate all gears ok and it goes into neutral ok. Any ideas before I crack this thing open?

Well I took it apart. One of the main shafts gots destroyed and the bearing is gone. Fortunately all parts are availalbe form sears parts direct. So hopefully in a week or so I can put this thing back together.

Hope your project is going well. I am considering purchasing a Craftsman tiller with a problem very similar to yours. If you don't mind me asking, approximately how much did the parts cost you?
