hi all im trying to find out if a ford 1520 deisel has a positive crankcase venting system. after all the blowby stuff i tried i finally had the engine tore down and new rings and berrings installed and the engine did not need this done as the cyls still had the factory hatch marks and absolutly no ridge in the cyls at all. yet after all this. expense and work i still have a positive crankcase pressure and smoke just like before. why???????? I need help mental for sure im thinking the tractor has to have a vent system besides the hose out of the valve cover and it might be blocked. thanks to all for your help brad

I have a Ford 1220 that does the same thing. I also had the motor rebuilt ,still the same . The dealer said Fords just do it .Mine also smokes out the exhaust . Some tractors just do it even if there is nothing wrong with the motor. You just have to learn to live with it.
It does take some time, but don't worry there is nothing wrong.

There is going to be some smoke from the blowby tube. All engines have some blowby, there's no way to create a positive seal with the rings on the cylinder walls, it's when the the blowby gets excessive that you need to worry. Then only vent for the crankcase is that tube hooked to the block. Ask your dealer to let you look in the service manual and see what Ford says is excessive blowby. There are ways to measure it.

You should have very, very little blowby. In fact, with the engine warm there should be essentially none. That black plastic hose off of the valve cover is all there is to the system. There is no "positive" or forced ventilation like on most automobiles, probably because of different emission requirements and the very little value added. All the positive system does is draws out the crankcase gases and puts them in the intake manifold on a car rather than venting them to the atmosphere. If your tractor's system is working OK, you should see the gases coming out the black tube, but if you see a lot, it's an indication of a problem or at least the start of one. My old 1720 (600 hours) and new TC45D have essentially nothing coming out, except for maybe a little vapor shortly after starting. A compression check should tell you the condition of your rings and cylinders. If your getting much smoking I'd expect you'll see oil usage as well since more oil is probably also getting past the rings and burning inside the cylinders. Good Luck and let us know how things turn out. DJ Radz.
