I'm not saying it's wet here or anything, but yesterday I found a crawdad, or at least his head, in my driveway. I suppose the cat could have left him there after catching him in the nearby drainage ditch, but I'm also seeing crawdad-looking holes in my strawberry patch! Neat round holes surrounded by molded mud piles....maybe the moles are cross-breeding with crawdads?

A low area of my property has crawdads all the time, although they are more numerous in the spring. I’ve learned to hate them as much as moles. They build those mounds, then it dries out and they get almost as hard as concrete! I haven’t found a way to get rid of them without killing all the grass and trees as well (I had a thread on it here last year).

It is that time of year again, most of ours are around the ponds.

This weekend, my neighbor is having a crawdad party. They do this every other year, and they order around 100lbs. of crawdads and have a big feast with family and friends. Crawdad's are tasty treats, that's for sure.

Up here in New York, great blue herons eat a lot of crayfish (that's northern talk for crawdads/w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif), and I often find the heads and claws on our bridge over our creek, where the herons like to sit and eat them.

Could also be racoons, they are quite fond of crawfish.

My first thought was "wish I were there", but then on further reflection . . . only 100 pounds? Must be a small group . . . or is that just the appetizer?/w3tcompact/icons/wink.gif

Well, everyone brings a dish to pass, and half the people won't eat the crawdads. Lots of cajun food though. Mmmmmmm!!!

The only proper way of getting rid of 'em is eating 'em. There is an excellent recipe in Jeff Smith's Frugal Gourmet cooks American for Crawfish Newburg. I make it with shrimp when I can't get the little mudbugs /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

I'll never forget the first time I ever visited Louisiana; Spring of '73 to visit an old classmate from Northwestern and his family in Baton Rouge. He and I drove out to a bayou where some folks had a little camp set up and were running trap lines and we bought a sack of live crawfish (51 pounds), went back to their house, and started the crawfish boil about 10 o'clock in the morning and we sat out in their back yard eating boiled crawfish until late that evening (ate'em all, too), then his wife went in the house and fried a big bunch of crawfish tails she already had peeled for supper./w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif Another time we visited them, we went out to eat and had an eight course dinner (crawfish fixed 8 different ways). Love that Cajun food.

We had a big cookout. Fresh catfish, frog legs, fried snapping turtle and morel mushrooms. You would have thought we were serving rat poison/w3tcompact/icons/shocked.gif. These were town folk and if it didn't come from the supermarket it wasn't edible. I shore ate well the next couple of days/w3tcompact/icons/grin.gif, go figure!
