New Holland TC33D
I've noticed a creaking and popping noise coming from the left rear axel area (same side as differential lock pedal). I've noticed it previously but only once in a while but this week while Bush hogging my field it was happening a lot. I'm not sure if this is differential related or other internal to the axel? I've also noticed I have a leak on rear axel seal and seems to be getting worse, related? I have a picture of inside rear rim and axel, it looks like axel may be pulling out some (towards wheel)? Looking for some advice. Thinking I need to seek professional repair. I reviewed the manuals and just to replace the axel seal is a large job for me as you have to pull the transaxle case to service. Thanks.

Not being a smart guy but, have you ever bothered to wash it? Be a lot easier to see an issue, if you could actually see it. Are you sure it's not loose wheel bolts? Ever bother checking them?

Never seen loose wheel bolts cause a seal to leak. That amount of oil/dirt inside the rim is a tell tale sign of a wheel seal leaking. The other sign is the slightly less dirt crusted area right at the wheel seal.

If you have to ask if you need professional help you should prob take it in for repair. The creaking and poping could be bearings going/gone bad. The more you use it the more stuff can break so take it in.

It doesn't take long to lose a substantial amount of oil from what may appear as a small leak. I just replaced the pedal shaft seals on my 3910. When I drained the rear end, I was expecting to get 10-11 gallons out of the 12 it holds. Turns out I got less than 6 gallons. o_O

I must have been oiling the fields for some time.

Due to oil leakage & clean area on axle indicating axle has moved out of axle housing I think rear axle housing needs to be removed to inspect axle brgs. It's possible nut(item 21) has backed off.
Thanks for your reply. I was coming to a similar conclusion as you and I just don't have the time to do this and possibly don't have the skills 😄 I found a New Holland dealer about 40 miles from me, I'm going to take it in and have them repair.

Probably the best bet as you need to access the back case to access the nut. Not familiar with NH compact tractors but on my bigger Kubota's the rear pto carrier casting is removable and that allows access to the rear gearcase.

Update: had my machine repaired at a New Holland dealer. New transaxle housing, bearings and seal. Expensive repair but glad I have it back and also glad I didn't attempt 😅

It occurred to me to suggest that you probably don't want to road it there.

But, hey, if you wanted to hear a noisy dipstick, you'd probably just pull your own out of the engine and drag it against the fan blades. So I kept quiet.

Congratulations on having your machine proper again!
