So I was out mowing my creeping charlie, and I thought, "you know, grass would look pretty nice and wouldn't die off to mud when it got cold. Perhaps I should get some of that grass stuff to grow."

Having dogs who frequent said creeping charlie, I am averse to useing weed killers or flame throwers. Although weed killer labels say it's safe for dogs after one day, (image of spaniel crossing legs for one day) I think that's a bunch of huey. Dogs (and kids) who regularly use lawns where weed killer is applied are considerably more likely to get cancers and breathing disorders and the children (and dogs) who use lawns where flame throwers have been used are likely to be fatherless.

This got me to thinking that there may be some other way of removing the Charlie and replacing it with turf. Anyone have any ideas?

How big an area are we talking about? If it's like 40' x 40' or bigger, I'd rototill it under thoroughly and plant the grass seed. if smaller, you can cover it with a tarp for about 2 weeks or a little longer, and smother it, rake it off after and plant the seed.

The area is about 80 by 200 feet minus various trees and a few small buildings. It's pretty much my whole fenced lawn area to varying degrees.

I'm a bit worried about tilling close to trees. How deep do you till Creeping Charlie roots go to actually kil it off?

It's really very prolific in my yard. It grows much better than grass does and quickly smothers any grass that might decide to try.

When the area I want to kill may have children or animals I use Natural Horticultural Vinegar. The ingrediients aare Horticultural White Vivegar (200 grain) and Yucca Schidigera Extract.
You can apply (hot dry day) and about an hour later till up or whatever as it kills through the leaves down into the roots. It will kill whatever it touches regarding plant life.
