I thought this article was interesting:
Food rise has Bolivia's coca farmers planting rice - Yahoo! News
So we've been paying subsidies to farmers to keep food prices low... which makes those crops less appealing for farmers to grow in other countries... they look for 'cash crops'. We've also been paying for the 'War on Drugs'.
All we really needed to do was make 'staple crops' more expensive by not paying subsidies and farmers would switch to these new 'cash crops' and we would have saved money on both fronts?
