Crud: litter of raccoons

That's funny! This whole scenario is remarkable similar to the Disney movie "The Fox and The Hound." Except the outcome I guess.

Well, the problem was solved by the neighbor. She brought so many friends and relatives to check out the cute raccoons that Momma Coon felt pressured and moved out. Two nights later they broke into our other neighbor's house (quarter mile across a meadow). His dog raised the alarm. There were no survivors among the Coon family. Today I'll be helping my neighbor repair the shotgun damage to his walls and floors.

:laughing::laughing: I DID NOT see that coming! I figured a few other possible results but not a Raccoon Home Invasion....:laughing::laughing:

My parents have raccoons at their place and they are big, mean and scary. Surprisingly, I have only seen one raccoon at our place and it was when I put hot wort on the front porch to cool off. A raccoon came out of the woods and was making a bee line for that sweet wort! About the same time a possum was doing the same thing!

Glad to hear the situation is resolved. Cute is not a word I would us de to describe the varmints. I've got at least 20 hitting my deer feeder. Probably closer to 40. Season here doesn't open till 11/15. Even if distemper and other disease takes half of them, I'll still have between 10 and 20 left. I'll defitinely be trapping this year. I've got to the number down. I'm planning on using Duke's dog proof traps, about $15 a piece. Hopefully, I can make enough off the pelts to pay for the traps.

I am thinking of buying some of those traps, but I also have possums and an occasional skunk. Will they catch all 3 varmints?

Duke and other DPs ('Egg', Coon Cuff, etc) are very target-specific. Other critters won't reach into the tiny openings and most dogs just can't. 'Coon may chew off a front foot to get out of a leg-hold trap but have no access to do so in a DP so they stay put till you run your line. (daily)

As with leg-hold traps 'coons can stir up a mess within the short length of the chain. Anchor well and use .22 RF or pellet gun, etc to dispatch. (Like possum, they don't succumb quickly from a first fatal shot.)

Bait can be a mash of creamed, canned, or shelled, corn bulked up with cornmeal, used fry oil, etc). Scatter some around the trap as well as in it. Others will 'clean up' the surroundings at first but 'coons will go for the last bit in the trap once familiar with the location. (... esp the day you don't re-bait ;))

Since the coons obviously love my cantaloupe, I think I'll use a ripe slice to lure them into my cage trap. Apparently they like the cantaloupe better than the sardines that i bait with.
