Hello, I was considering the hst 40 and have read that the gear models are a little better when pulling long periods of time for constant speed. I see that u can have cruise on the hst models, so does that not help you when you need to keep a constant speed for awhile, or does it not work very well under load or something? I am seriously considering a hst and am going to drive one again tommorow, so I was wondering how the cruise have affected people, Neg. or pos., thanks, Griz.

The cruise works fine and w/ the 35-45D u have a 2 speed cruise w/ the rabbit and turtle switch.
I think what some people are talking about is the gear drive works better for setting a speed and using it for a half or all day like working ground (plowing and discing).
Some people think u could run into over heating in the hydraulic system working the tractor hard for long periods.
I've pulled a 8' landscape rake for hours behind my 35D w/o any trouble.

I've pulled a 5' disc for 6 hours straight with the cruise engaged and my little 33 in hot Alabama sun had no problems overheating or keeping a constant speed. The operator, on the other hand got pretty hot /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I think the only real issue of gear over HST is that with gear you get more of your engine's HP transmitted to the wheels (there are higher losses in an HST system). Assuming you have the traction to use the extra HP, this would be an advantage when using ground-engaging implements. You could go a bit faster, pull a bit larger implement and/or work in tougher ground conditions.

I have run a 5' brush hog on a B2710 Kubota with HST at the 540 PTO speed for up to 11 hours on the meter in one day; admittedly not quite the same as pulling hard on a plow in the ground. Sometimes set the cruise for quite some time, other times just had my foot on the pedal. I think you'll like the HST and not have anything to worry about.
