We started baling our own hay this year since we have a tractor capable of doing the work. The baler that we are borrowing does not have a kicker so we are not pulling a wagon and I dont have a flat wagon either. The bales are going straight onto the ground and get picked up later.

The question is, can a 450 handle a baler and a wagon load of hay? Would you try it on flat and/or hilly fields? Is the towing capacity enough? (6000-9000lbs?)

Thoughts?

Thanks,
Tim

This is the flattest piece that I have, its around 4 acres.

This is heading up the steepest part of the hill. The hill is not very steep but just a long grade. The up side of the hill is steeper than the down side.

I wouldn't hesitate putting a wagon behind the baler and load it from the baler on that field. Years ago on the farm we used a Super H for baling, pulling the rack with it on steeper slopes than that. Don't know what speed or gears you are running at, but you might have to slow down a little. If it is an HST and you are running in mid-range about 1/2 pedal stroke, try low range at full pedal. This will give close to same travel speed but require less engine power (reduces the HST pump pressure required).

You can easily handlle one of these, too.

Your tractor can handle the baler and wagon on flat dry ground. If there is a soft spot though and you have a partially loaded wagon or almost full wagon you will be stuck. I had to unhook the kicker wagon with 130 bales on it once because it sunk in a soft spot and my TN65 with FWA could not pull it through while hooked to the baler.

My Amish neighbors did the cutting this year, we are trading mowing services for hay. They just got about 1100 bales from first cut. The mower is what we are looking at for purchasing next year. One piece at a time.

We bale hay with a Kubota L3830 pulling a New Holland Hayliner 273 with a belt kicker and a basket style wagon that holds 100-130 bales (100 on the road, 130 if just going to the barn or if I am stacking).
Have only had to unhook the wagon once (dropped the wheel of the wagon into a wet spot). We do not have a loader, but do have loaded rear tires.

On the to-do list:
Load the fronts or find front weights as a little more weight to keep the nose down when starting off would be helpful (starting off while going uphill it is hard to turn as the nose is very light).
Replace the spring tensioners on the baler with a airbag.

Otherwise, it works well for us to do the ~750 bales of first cut and 400-500 bales of 2nd cut that we do each year.
