I have a 1250 cub. My issue is with the hydrostatic transmission. The issue first started when my wife was mowing lawn and it seemed to not stay at a single speed (slow down and then speed up with the handle in the sam position). I checked the oil and it was fine (slowly seeping out the fill when opened). Now a few days later after using it it will not move at all (foward or reverse). Is this a pump issue or a filter issue or something i am not even thinking about. Any help at all would be greatly appreciated .

first thing i would check is the drive belt. they get shinny and worn, they may seem like they're okay but they're shot. mine was doing about the same thing (1730) and i had the belt changed WOW!! what a differance. it didn't move like that when it was new. also you may be throwing some oil on the belt from somewhere that's causing it to slip. check it out or run it over to the dealer. i couldn't change my own belt, to many things to get out of the way. the dealer was about $70 but well worth it. like i said it's like a new mower.

I don't have a belt for the transmission. It is a drive shaft into it.

How many hours on the unit? Did the hydro oil look good? (not burnt/black). Is there a bypass lever that allows you to freewheel/push the machine? Maybe the bypass is open or partially open.

Well as far as I know the unit has never been rebuilt and all I do is change the filter and oil every few years. I changed it last June. As for the bypass lever, the one I got to replace the one that was busted on it doesn't even reach the two valves so I highly doubt that could be the issue. I have never seen one of these apart so I am clueless on the inner workings but this just happened suddenly. The oil is red and doesn't smell burnt. I am going to chech the bypasses to be sure but is there a pump inside that is easily replaced?

I dunno the age or hours on the unit, but they typically loose some or all ground speed after the oil is warmed up when they are worn out. They might perform fine when cold, but start to act up once hot. A thicker hydraulic fluid can keep a worn hydro working a bit longer. You probably have a Sauer-Sundstrand/Danfoss transaxle? Parts are replaceable, but $$$, just like any hydro drive.

What's the chance that the hydro control lever itself is slipping on the shaft? I'm pretty sure that there's a set screw on it that may have loosened. Possibly the splines on the lever are worn.
