cub cadet 7530
i recently inherited a very nice cc1600 tractor with a 16.5 vanguard motor. the thing is in nice shape except that it doesn't go in reverse. the differential seems to work with the rear off the ground, so i imagine it shouldn't be too big of a problem. my local dealer that i usually don't deal with says it needs a new rear end to the tune of $750 or so. i took the machine back and tore into it myself and found a broken gear. the dealer said these parts are not available. the daeler i bought my 7530 cc from is much more honest but about 50 miles away, i didn't think this little machine warranted the expense of taking it there. any ideas where i can get parts?? this seems to be similar to MTD rears, is this true? by the way my 7530 is an absolute joy to own and seems to be indestructible.

I take it the 1600 is some type of gear drive? If a hydro goes forward, it will go in reverse as well provided the pedal linkage is adjusted.

I would give your "honest" dealer a call and find out what they say. I would think they can advise you on what to do. One way or another it would need to be repaired.

A few things here from looking at C&G's site. The transmission for the 1600 is only sold from Cub Cadet as an assembly, in that event the dealer was correct. But, the list price for it is $369.54. This is a single speed transmission with a variable speed belt drive. But, if you can determine the manufacturer of the transmission, parts may be available directly from them. It will likely be made by Peerless/Tecumseh or Hydro-Gear. If all that fails, a machine shop might be able to fabricate the broken gear.
