I have a 1979 Cub Cadet 1450 with the Kohler 14hp single cylinder motor removed out of it and replaced it with a v-twin 18hp B&S vanguard horizontal shaft. Because the B&S motor is thinner then the Kohler, the driveshaft from the tranny to the motor is 3 inches or so short of the flywheel. Dose anybody know of an adapter for this type of motor upgrade???. There are kits out there for 'repower' of old tractors but they dont sell just the adapter they want to sell the motor as well , I already had a good motor in my shop. Any help would be great, im frigging stumped about this!!!....

Having a couple of the vintage Cubs you talk about I just cant remember what the connection to the trans. is. The front is a canvas flex coupler. Honestly I would try to make one from new round stock but then the ends may be a special deal too. Just can't picture one in my mind. Another option is to check the small engine warehouse AKA Roy Padgette sales. They may have a conversion kit?? Make sure your plastic fan is in place on the driveshaft. If you don't see a fan towards the back look for a piece of plastic on the shaft where it was. This cools the transaxle. They are not a lot of money so while you are this deep it might be a thing to replace. They get brittle with time/heat. Also get a trans. filter and change the rear end fluid. My choice is always synthetic for engine and rear ends in these from Amsoil. You can also use HyTran from a Case IH dealer or Cub Cadet version.

If i'm not mistaken the drive shafts are simply a piece of 1/2" cold rolled round stock the end adaptors and fan (if you have one) are held in place with roll pins. not too hard to fabricate what you need ;) .good luck

I've made a few driveshafts for cubs out of 5/8" round and drilling the holes for the couplings and clutches.

Check out the IH Cub Cadet Forum. There is a lot of information and help available there and most likely someone has already addressed this situation successfully. I used to own several old CC's and I always found that forum very helpful.

How would the shaft attach to the flywheel? That would be the only problem. Once you figure that out the rest is easy.

A picture of the flywheel would help me suggest a fix..

I suggest you contact a business in Minnesota that does garden tractor repowering. Jims Repair is located about 20 miles south of the twin cities and they promote the Briggs replacement engines for the Kohler K series engines. They have kits or will do the work for you. I'm pretty sure they could answer any questions you have and provide you some parts you need. THeir web site address is: jimsrepairjimsrepair.com/

Most any machine shop could make one in two hours including study time!

The repower engines for shaft drive tractors have flywheels with an extended hub that the drive shaft bolts on to. These are factory flywheels intended for the purpose of driving something off the flywheel end of the engine in addition to the crankshaft drive end. Unless you have that type of flywheel for the Briggs (They do make them), I don't see any practical way you will get the driveshaft coupler for the Cub to bolt up to the flywheel, at least not in a way that will be balanced and reliable.
