cub cadet 1864 rear axle seal replace.

have a 1864 cub cadet. trying to get axle out to replace seal. i know i have to take a retaining ring off to remove axle. took rear plate off of rear end housing where you can see ring and pinion gears. can't even see the gears on end of axle to take off retaining ring. can anyone help me out on this? thanks.

If memory serves you have to jack the unit up, remove the wheel, then the brake assembly first. Then remove the rear plate on the rear. You will lose all your fluid when you do this. Rotate the axle shaft until a oblong cutout appears which will allow access to the clip on the end of the axle. Push the axle in and pull out on it and you will see the clip. A hose remove tool, device with a 90 degree bend at the end to loosen and remove hoses then can be used to pull the clip out. Getting it back requires a good pair of needle nose pliers.

Do not rotate either if the axles or move anything while you have the axle out. The rear end is just like a GM differential.
