Cub Cadet GT2542
I read that there is an engagement cable that attaches from clutch to mower deck that might be missing ??? NO IDEA... The pictures and diagrams I've searched through don't seem to show the cable I'm talking about. Anyone have any ideas?.......

There is no cable involved in operating the pto on a GT2542. I have owned one since 2006 and do all my own repairs at least so far.
I just had to replace the PTO on mine due to bearing wear a couple of weeks ago. The pto is bolted on in front of the crankshaft and is pretty easy to replace if needed. The clutch has a 2 wire connector that attaches on right side (discharge side). Find the connector and unplug it. Get a voltmeter and check voltage on the body side of connector with engine running, with the pto switch pulled out and with someone or something heavy in seat. If you don't get 12 volts you have an electrical problem or a bad pto switch.. I don't know if there is a fuse or not as I did not have electrical problem. If you need a new pto I recommend getting an Extreme brand. They have a larger bearing than the original Warner and are more economical. I think I paid about $115.00 for my new pto. If you have to replace pto remove the muffler guard along with the throttle and choke brackets. Two bolts hold the pto to engine. Also you will need to hold the driveshaft from turning as the pto is mounted pretty tight. As I remember I torqued the new one to 47 foot pounds. I used a pipe wrench around the driveshaft behind the engine. Instructions came with mine on the torque values and how to break it in initially.

There is only 1 bolt holding the pto to driveshaft.

With the engine OFF, make a jumper wire from the battery (+) and touch the other end to the PTO clutch connector a few times. You should be able to hear it click on and off. If you can, the clutch is good. Remove the jumper and reconnect the original connector to the PTO clutch.

The PTO clutch could be wired in series with several "Safety Switches". One most common is on the seat. There has to be pressure on the seat to engage the PTO clutch (blades). There could be others. The switches do go bad and fail to make contact. Check your manual for a wiring diagram and what has to occur before engaging the PTO. Some won't engage the PTO if the mower is in reverse but will go into reverse with the PTO on. There may be a switch on the clutch or brake as well. Read you manual.

Thank you, Tinhack. What type of wire can I use to test the clutch?

Hopefully, this would be a piece of electrical wire. (Not bailing wire.) Perhaps 18-16 gauge. Smaller would work since you'll just be "flashing" the clutch to see if it engages.
