Looking
I'm Looking at a new Cub Cadet M60 ZTR mower with a 29hp. kawasaki motor Fuel injected. Anyone know anything about this thing?? It has a 60" deck too. It seems to be very well built but I have never had a Cub before. I've always have liked the Kubota in the past but the Cub dealer was great and gave me a great price as well for this one!! $8450.00 with 0% for 36 months! Does anyone have any input on this?? How do these hold up? It would be greatly appreciated!!! Thanks!! /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

I own a M60 that I use commercially.
Good mower. Nice cut, stripes great.

The only thing I would be concerned about is the price and engine.
My Cub was 6900. with a 25 hp Kawasaki. Plenty of power.
8450. for the 29 hp might be a decent price, but will you need it?
The fuel injected engine is set up like a newer car or truck. Computer, o2 sensor, etc.
They have had some problems with that setup on small engines. To finicky.

As I have stated many times in the past these are absolutly AWESOME machines. It took my dealer rep 2 years to convince me I should stock them, well now the Cub Commercial units are my biggest commerical sellers!

I don't sock any of the EFI units although I did sell two last year. Customers came in, I showed them the M60 with the 25hp Kaw., they took the brochure home and came back a few days later and put down a deposit on the EFI units...thats how great these machines are, they basically sell themselves often times site unseen!

Anyway...the main difference between the M60 and the M60 with the EFI motor (besides the obvious motor difference) is that the the EFI unit has a wider stance and more aggresive tires standard, hence the price difference.

These machines are secone to none on the market. I have gone on record many times saying that only Kubota makes a gas powered machine that can compete but is a lot more money. Yeah the Kubotas have some fancy features but at what cost, your just cutting grass...and the Cub has one of the most advanced decks on the market.

As far as the price...its good. The machines MSRP is $8999, so your getting an automatic $550 off MSRP. I sold my two EFI units for $8100 even...BUT remember that the great finance deal cost the dealer a little...sounds like your getting a good deal from a good dealer on a great machine, whats not to like?!?!

P.S. There is a limited supply of these units this year so don't be shy about putting your name on the dotted line!

I don't own any of the Cub models, but I have been looking at this model a lot lately. I've done some research on it, and from that I think it would perform well. Right now we use J.D.'s for cutting. The last one was a 757-Z we bought in 04. 25 h.p. Kaw, 60" 7-iron deck, air cooled. it works well for us and after tax came in at $8k. I may try to add one of these Cubs this year.

How does the Scag line compare with the high end John Deeres and Cubs?

Just curious as I have a friend in the market for a ZTR for mowing close to 20 acres a week (some his own, some for neighbors).

If you are interested in the M60 you should also check with Lesco, http://www.lesco.com . It is the same mower, but a few dollars cheaper. They designed and built it and worked out a deal with MTD/CUB on marketing and sales. They also still sell the mower themselves and carry parts.
I bought the CUB and have the M60 (25hp KAW) myself, and I got it a couple of years ago when CUB had the 0% for 1 year financing. I liked the idea of having 2 different sources to obtain parts, just different color paints, if I got into a pinch. I use it to mow my 5 acres, and it isn't bad. I like the mower, and for the $$$, it is hard to beat. I paid $6999 in spring 02 or 03.
There are some things I like/dislike about it more than other commerical series ZTRs.
Here are some things I have noticed just off the top of my head:
* I have found that with heavy wet grass the 25hp has all it wants and you can bog it down. (This grass is mowed every week, but is thick) While not bad as it is, the 29 HP would fix that nicely. I have mowed this same area with an Exmark and had similar results.
* The belt tension lever/rod is not really designed well for my model. I believe they have a new design out, but I have only seen it on the 72" model so far. If I can swap it on mine I will. The rod retainer is designed into the pulley cover and you have to have it on to keep tension.
* No rear hitch/draw bar. You have to fab one if you plan on pulling any lawn trailers around.
* The mowing deck is pulled by the front attachment and not hanging by chains. Deck still floats, but uses sliding brackets instead.
* No tow hooks or attachments. No provisions for tie downs either.
* Standard seat is just as comfy as the upgrade model.
* No option for lights on my model, or at least at the time I purchased. (Some ZTRs have them, some don't) Not really any good place to put lights either.
* Made with the same wheel motors, pumps, and engine as any of the other brand. Also has same wheel and tire sizes.
* Easy to grease and change oil.
* If you put more air in the front tires they tend to catch grass clippings.
* deck drive belt is on a flat plain, no extra pulleys to go bad or worry about. Also this helps in departure angle too. No protective bracket hanging down to high center you.
* Floating front axle makes for a "better" ride and cut on bumpy stuff. Also helps on hillside mowing.
* Smaller cockpit area, but good visibility
* Pretty stable on hill side/inclines.
* Lifting the deck can help you get out of some mud, it puts more weight on the drive wheels. (This could hurt too)
* If you spray the deck off with water to clean it, turn the deck on afterwards to sling any water out of the pulleys. ( I did have to replace one of the deck idler pulleys due to bearing holding water and falling apart. ( I spray my mower off about every 2 mows to keep it clean, check everything out, and grease it for next time.)
* Uses about 5 gals. of gas to mow 5 acres.
* The cut finish and striping is top notch.

For close to $8500, I would also advise hitting the dealer to throw in a free extra set of blades when you make the purchase or even a free service/maintenace coupon/credit . All mowers cut their best with sharp blades, and with 2 sets you can swap them out and sharpen when it is raining so you have less down time. Buy a box of hearing protection plugs or a MP3 player, good sunglasses, and some sun-block.

Hope it helps.

Sorry for the late reply. I just noticed you had replied to me! I personally don't know much about the Scag line. But, I know a couple of lawn guys who use them. They feel they are "the" machine to have when it comes to lawn cutting. They appear to be built like tanks, and I know the one guy who uses them isn't overly concerned with or involved in preventative maint. and is NOT an "equipment friendly" operator, if you know what I mean. However, his machines are always running, not necessarily looking great, but they continue to get the job done!

I guess his thoughts are run it hard wear it out and replace it.

I own a Scag ZTR and I can tell you it is built rock solid. This is the second Scag mower I have owned (the first was a walk behind). I'm an IT Manager by trade and I sit in an office all day overlooking our corporate center. I was sold on the Scag by watching the lanscape workers running around on these things all day. If they can handle running all day every day then they will surely last me a lifetime on my 2 acres.
Here is a pic of my current Scag. It's a 2001 Turf Tiger with a 27 HP Liquid Kawasaki and a 72" deck.

I'll second that for the Scag line. I got the Scag Wildcat last year and have been nothing but pleased with it.
I'll attach a pic.
