As mentioned earlier the 3000 series has been around since 1997. Thats about 10 years and these machines are still going strong. The good part is most if not all attachments are universal between models (decks,blades,hitches,3pts,etc)...parts are plenty and the machine is easy to fix. Its not to say they couldnt use some improvements in refinement over the years, but overall its a solid machine.
In some cases if you are looking at deere X500 series, the 2544 series Cub is an equal model. However the deere does offer liquid cooled machines in the X500 series, so thats an advantage (but with a price)...

I think the new stuff pound for pound is as good as the old.

I don't know if I'd go as far as that, but the "new" ones are pretty good...they're just not made like tanks, like the early ones were. Compared to the other stuff out there today, they are.

Between my dad and me, we've owned three. The first was a '60's vintage with, I think, an 8 HP Kohler; the second was a 10 HP Kohler hydrostat; current is a 2140. I traded the first one in while he was in the hospital, I don't think he ever forgave me for that but he should have since I paid for the new one. That 12hp hydrostat was used to mow a little more than an acre for 17 years and was still a perfectly good mower when I sold it to a friend.
