I attempted to engage the PTO after changing the mowing blades today. The tractor started fine, but the PTO would not engage. I could hear is a clicking sound coming from the right side of the of the engine. It appeared that a wire moved when pulling the electric PTO switch. I need to mow the lawn tomorrow. Could anyone recommend a list of things to check? Thanks in advance.

1)Take belt off the PTO and check that blades turn freely by hand.
2)With belt still off start engine and engage PTO and see if pulley spins. This may require having someone else watching or sitting in the seat.
3)If pulley doesn't spin check wiring to PTO connection and for voltage when engaged.

Let us know what you find.

I just replaced the blades on my SLT 1550 last week with Gator style mulching blades. They really work great!
You need to check your belt routing if you removed the deck to replace them.
Also I hope you greased the spindles while you were there. My spindles didn't seem to have grease from factory, they took a lot the first time. The fittings are on the bottom just above the blade mount area. Another fitting on the idler pulley arm on top of the deck. Front wheels and spindles too.

Thank you for the reply. I know the steps recommended should have been my first actions. I was working too quickly yesterday and rushed to judgement that something could be wrong with the PTO switch/clutch/wiring. It turns out I had belt problems.

Thanks again!

These are exellent mowers by the way! I am very happy with mine. It cuts great, comfortable to drive. I do wish it had faster ground speed. If I drive up the street to see a friend I can walk faster!
In case you didn't see my post, I bought a new OEM MTD/Cub deck belt at Lowes for Under $40. I saw others on the net for over $80. some not OEM.

Yes. This machine mows better than the Exmark professional machine that my buddy owns. I guess my deck is adjusted just right. As for the spindles, I did not lube them up. My grease gun was empty. I bought the 1550 used with 19 hours on it. I now have 50 and have already changed the oil. I will take the deck off again next week and get the job done. I will lube the front wheels as well. I agree with your comment about the hills. It's amazing how much power they lose! It's not a turtle's pace, but significantly slower than level ground. Also, I have the gator blades...AWESOME!!! I just put the OEM blades on because I will be towing my Cyclone Rake lawn vac when I mow today. Unfortunately, I let the grass go a little too long this time and it would be too much for the gator blades.
