I have a Cub Cadet SRC 621 6 speed rear wheel drive walk behind mower that I use for trim work on our farm. Actually, I've never even used it, my wife prefers to do the lawn work herself. While mowing the other day, the blade came off!!! When I checked it, I saw that the bolt that holds the blade on was broken in half. I have to get the rest of the old bolt out before I can get a new bolt on to hold the blade. Do I need to take the mower to a repair shop, or can I do this myself? I don't have a clue how to do this. Is it possible to drill it out? It seems to me that would need a special bit and drill. If I bring it to a shop, is this gonna be an expensive repair? I bought this mower on sale at Lowes about 3 years ago, figuring that it was a top of the line mower, and would be pretty trouble free for at least a while. I've had better luck with cheap Craftsman push mowers than this.

Rich if your handy you might get a left hand drill bit and try to drill it out. You might get lucky and it come right out. The bolt should be a grade 5. They aren't to bad to drill. Take a center punch and get the hole smack dab in the center and drill away. If your unsure I would call a repair facility and ask them what it would cost to get it out for you. I not a huge fan of MTD products but somebody has to keep us in business:D

I would center drill the bolt and then use an Easy-Out to remove the remaining part. That's a normal drill for drilling and the Easy-Out digs into the bolt as it is turned counter-clockwise. If you have a Harbor Freight or Northern Tools nearby, you can buy Easy-Outs. Otherwise, almost any auto parts store will have them.

Screw Extractors

Be careful. You want to make sure you use a large enough drill that the Easy Out can be big enough that it won't snap off inside the drilled hole.

Before drilling and using screw extractors you might try taking a hammer and small cold chisel and tap around the outside of the bolt to see if it will turn. We got a grade 8 out of the crankshaft of a 302 Ford that way. Came right out.
