Bought a used Trac-Vac last week and the guy had a collection of Cub's. Talked me into getting one.

Picked it up today. Not an IH but a MTD.

Model 1641 from 1995?. 16hp Briggs, 44" deck, 45" blower. 338 hours.

Everything seems fine.

Is there something I should check into right away?

Is there something I should absolutely avoid?

There does seems to be some smell from the belt like perhaps it's too tight?

When I put it in reverse the PTO shuts down. I know this is proper but it does not restart when I go forward again unless it reengage the PTO. Is this normal?

Do some of you disconnect this safety feature?

Also, when the PTO is engaged the engine runs smooth but the deck seems to hunt? Is this normal?

Any special lubes you recommend?

Did they make a front loader for this?

Thanks in advance...

Bob

Bob, my head hurts now.. :) Lots of questions. Sounds like you've got a great machine. The 44" deck is a good one. The deck may be slow to get up to speed if you engage it while it's lifted towards max hight. The reverse cutoff sounds normal, but I was not aware this was a 'feature' back then. I'd crawl under and reposition the paddle switch near the reverse pedal so the pedal never touches it. I believe your transaxle will use hytran oil which is cheap and easy to source. You can use dealer engine and trans filters, or x-ref them for easier to source filters.

http://ihregistry.com/manuals/op/1440.pdf is a link to the operator's manual. It seems odd that you would have to re-engage the PTO after backing up, but I'm not familar with your machine. If you have small children around that might run up behind the machine, might be a good idea to leave the backup safety in place.

I'm not sure why your deck would seem to hunt unless some grass has built up and is interfering with the belt tension.

good luck.

You can alos purchase Hytran at your local cub dealer. It just has the name "Hydraulic Transmission Fluid" on the bottle.

The only "repair" I had to do to my 1995 Cub Cadet (AGS1230 model if I remember right, so smaller than yours) was to replace one mower spindle that seized, and of course burned the belt a bit.

And yes, they shut down when you go to reverse and you have to turn off the PTO and turn it back on to get it on again, so I definitely had that feature disconnected.

How do you disconnect it?

Thanks...

How do you disconnect it?

Very soon after my Cub was delivered, I discovered that it would turn much shorter in one direction than the other. So I loaded it on my trailer and took it back to the dealer to get that corrected and also told him that reverse cut-off simply could not be tolerated. He tried to tell me it would be "illegal" for them to disconnect it, but that I could do it myself; just unplug a connection in the lower left corner under the hood. He said his mechanic would show me the plug, but they couldn't unplug it themselves. So I left to go do some other shopping while I was in town, then went back to pick up the Cub and the mechanic told me the reverse cut-off feature was disconnected, but "don't say anything to Robert (the boss) or I'll deny doing it." He did also tell me if I ever wanted to re-connect it, I'd find it to the lower left of the motor.
