Cultivation of Hard Compacted Land

My opinion: I just had to rebuild some flooded and compacted land. If I had it to do over I would put my time into proper prep instead of trying to just get it done to plant right now. Now I know to hire a big machine to rip, then follow with rock and debris picking as necessary, and then top dressing with topsoil/manure and a rototiller. You may lose a growing season, but you'll be happier in succeeding years.

land that hasn稚 been tilled for farmland is normally chisel plowed first to break the hard pan then disked or tilled depending on the size of the land. Had a friend that had cows on a place for 40 years and they went to precision level it to farm it in summer and it would stall the 8 wheeled articulated tractors if the dirt pan took to big of a bite off. The tiller would be ideal for smooth grass to cut but you can achieve close results with a light pole or log to smooth it off after it has been disked several times if you don稚 have a roller. It all depends on your budget and if you need it done quick. If you are building a house on it or adding on to your yard the tiller would do a nicer job. But for animal use a disc would be fine
