I've got one town owned culvert on each side of my driveway. Left side is an 18" plastic culvert. The right side is a 24" plastic culvert, installed a few years back when the torrential summer flooding washed out the old metal culvert. My problem is the town puts the culverts so close to the edge of the road near my drive there is very little and in some cases no shoulder at all and it makes it dangerous for driving and especially for plowing in winter. The one end where they leave plenty of extra culvert length is where the culverts empty out on the other side of the road?! This installation method makes no sense to me, and unfortunately when each culvert was replaced I was not around to speak to the road crew.
So now I want to add a section to the 24" culvert, probably a 10' section. The existing culvert says on the outflow end: S1-24-A and it is black poly with a smooth inner surface, only corrugation is on the outside surface.
I need to know if there is only one end that can be added to or are both ends able to take an additional piece? Do these type culverts require a collar and then a section or just a section that screws into or clamps over the existing? What range of price should I be expecting to pay for a 10' 24" dia. culvert. Should I buy a 20' and cut it to have another section for later use in case? Any other ideas etc., are appreciated too.

Thanks,

CM

A few years ago I bought 20' of 12" black corrugated culvert - also smooth inside. I think I paid around $120 Canadian for that. They have collars that wrap around two end sections of pipe and are pulled together - I used zip ties to close mine. The collars are also corrugated so they fit together very well. I seem to remember the collars being around $10 for 12" size. I imagine the 24" culvert will be quite a bit more expensive - but you are down in the US, so it may not be too bad. I would guess and say around $240 US for a 20' length. They will probably cut it in two for you when buy the pipe - they did it for me with no problems - sure makes it easier to transport home in the pickup.

Probably will have to buy full 20 foot stick, one end will have bell on it grease inside then with pressure will slide into non bell end for tight fit. If remember correctly 375 dollars per 20ft section. Make sure you get right one as different manufactures use different diameters so one will not fit another. Compaction is very important so follow manufactures directions. You can also purchase a coupling and accomplish the same thing. Hope this helps

When I have bought them, they come with a bell on one end and a o-ring gasket on the other. But they also make a connections collar, or you can fashion your own from galvanized sheet metal and screws. It need to be strong enough to hold together when back filled. After that, the fill bed and top arch of fill takes all the load.

The pipe cuts easy with a sawzall-all. I bought an extra 20' stick, bell/gasket ends, and cut 5' off each end to lengthen an existing culvert (which had the same ends). Then used the middle 10' for a narrow culvert elsewhere for my tractor. Soon, I will need to widen that to get me trailers across, and will tack on some end pieces as before, but with collars this time.

If there's a chance someone could wind up ditch bound shouldn't the town be notified? I'd think they would fix it properly no?

Thanks guys for the replies. I will see if I can get the manufacturer name from the town crew so I can get the same brand culvert to match up. Looking forward to finally getting this situation resolved correctly.

NO!:D Dream on; I'm lucky if we get any kind of service from them. They're way too busy getting their trucks stuck in the mud or snow! Pattern themselves after the Keystone Cops.:confused3:
I was able to get the road commish and the town supervisor of roads to agree to visit with me soon to see if they will pay for and supply the extension. It would solve the problem once and for all. Currently there is no ditch, just the end of the roadbed then a 4-5' drop into the stream outflow from my pond. They lay claim to 25' from center of the road in both directions, and if anything goes wrong they claim emminent domain and can't be sued, etc. Nice work if you can get it!:confused2:
I just want to make it right because things like this on my / their land drive me nutz!
Wish me luck, I don't give up easily, if ever.
