Nothing like Harv's escapades, but here's what I've done...

I put in a culvert last fall per county requirement to bridge the storm ditch along the road. I used PVC 12" pipe and had a load of fill (mostly local sand) brought in. Everything has held up reasonably well, though I've had some errosion/washout of the fill from above the culvert, not below/through. This is from water coming down my lane and washing over the sides of the fill.

This weekend, I repaired the washouts and covered the steeper faces of the fill with fieldstones we picked up last fall. Good FEL workout for me and my wife moved a couple of loads too. After a bunch of rain yesterday I'm pleased to report all is well and the culvert continues to function as planned /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

My other lesson learned in this has been to not use sand as the fill (I think I've warned a couple of folks about this). It doesn't stay put as well as processed road gravel or some other compactable fill. I'll put up with it as this is only our "service drive" but when I put in the real drive I'll be more careful with the fill selection.

One of these days, I'll buy or borrow a digital camera and post some pics /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif
