While doing some work on my back hoe/trencher...I found all the hydraulic fittings to be ORFS...previously I was only accustomed to the typical JIC, SAE and NTP fittings found on the tractors I've worked on...

At any rate...I had a leaky steering hose and when I took it to the shop the guy asked if I wanted to use the same ends or a complete new hose...he explained that the (ORFS) connection ends could be reused...just new hose and new crimp sleeves...I had not encountered this before...

My question is this: Is this common with some other (JIC etc.) hose ends or only with ORFS connections?...do the reusable ends require a different type of hose?...I think I paid $25 for an 18" hose using the original ORFS ends...

Another question on a different topic...on a closed center system can pressure lines be T'ed ?

Here is some data on reusable fittings and hose.

CAUTION: Field-Attachable Hose Fittings must be used with the properly specified hose. Using field-attachable hose fittings with hose other than those they are intended may result in hose failure and possible serious injury.

These are not "field attachable"...they have to be crimped on a typical hose press...that is what impressed me I did not have to buy new (ORFS) ends...just the sleeves that connect the ends to the hose...??

Answer is yes on teeing for CC hyd system.

All valves are installed in parrallel.

Was this not your question. [ do the reusable ends require a different type of hose? ]

Thanks for the quick replies J_J...:thumbsup:

I was assuming that is the case with CC systems...I ran into some tees as part of an auxiliary set up...

As for the hose fittings...Yes I was asking if anyone knew if these fittings required a special hose...I meant to ask the mechanic and I will the next time I see him...I do know that he said just the 18" section of hose was $10...which makes it better than $6/ft...it seems like other hoses they have made for me were $2-$3/ft just for the hose...

I just thought that it was a great concept and am wondering why it is not more common...and if it (reusable ends) is unique to ORFS connections...?
...I really like the ORFS idea as they being a mechanical joint....that a .02 cent o-ring will make them like new...any idea why they are not more common on the smaller utility tractors that so many of us maintain?

Thanks again for the info...

I think what you have there are fittings with separate crimping sleeves. Most hose ends today have permanently attached sleeves so reuse isn't an option. I personally never messed with the separate style much so I don't know if they are reusable, but my hunch is "why not"?

My guess on the permanently attached sleeves is that it is a liability issues. If they are separate pieces somebody could use the wrong sleeve, or mix parts from different vendors, etc. Plus the connection is a little more leak-proof as oil would have to go all the way down the fitting, then back up the hose.

Fittings for 4 wire hydraulic hose, which is very heavy duty, can use a separate sleeve and fitting. The sleeve is quite thick and compresses down in the crimper. Usually, much more pressure is required in the crimper than regular fittings. Something like a trencher/backhoe could very well have a heavy duty hose like that. If so, make sure it is replaced with a like hose.
