I've never done much side dressing of corn, but always been curious. I see guys drilling anhydrous in corn that is a foot high already. For the most part, it appears they're driving between the rows and running the knives between the rows. But what happens at the end of the row? Or if they get a little crooked.. At that stage, would drive over a row of corn kill the plants? Also, when drilling anhydrous in the fall, I see people running 30" rows. Do they then try to plant their corn on those rows in the spring? Or does that anhydrous move through the soil and sort of spread out?

Yes, a momentary lack of paying attention and you run over corn. It does kill it. I have run over more than my share side dressing. Haha. When you get to the end of row you run over a little but not really enough to hurt. As far your fall application question. The nitrogen moves about in the soil so its really not important to plant directly over where you ran the knives.

I grew up on my Dad’s farm on which he raised various row crops - sugar beets, dry beans, corn, and tomatoes, mainly. All required weeding and furrowing for irrigation several times a season with tractor-mounted cultivators. The weeding tools were generally mounted about two inches either side of the row, so getting off the row that much created “cultivator blight” – very unpopular with the father. :-(

Still, cultivating was a “prestige” assignment, which I greatly preferred over easier tasks.
