arent custom cylinder shops all over the place ? You just gotta find them, but many cut cylinders to length from precision tube and ground, chrome plated rod

All they have to do is lathe a piston, lathe thread to the piston rod, weld caps to it and some standard NPT nipples. many folks can do that.

Renze, I am sure you are right. Todd, Baileynet was the one I was thinking of (thanks).

This was for a friend who needs an estimate to decide whether or not to go to Gehl (OEM) to replace a ram on a BH. I mentioned there were places he could get estimates online to see how the prices matched up (custom vs OEM).

If you know the dimensions you need, try searching Surpluscenter.com, they sell surplus and discontinued cyl's , pumps, motors.

For what its worth, I've cut down several cylinders myself to shorten the tube and get a custom length rod. Just put a metal cutting wheel in the table saw and have at it. I use the kind which has the 4 external rods to hold the caps together. Just cut them, too, and re-thread.

Stuff it back together and Bingo, in 1/2 hour you have it on the machine.

If your buddy only needs a new rod, why not buy a replacement rod, have the threads cut on one end and weld on the end he needs on the other side.
