I would run away from a tractor that hasn't had the oil changed in 7 years. WTF was that guy thinking. You don't change the oil just based on hours you also change it at least once a year regardless of hours.

It seemed like it was still the right deal- but thanks to those who confirmed it. I'm not ignoring the dissenting opinion, but at least with this one I know the good and bad. I've looked at a couple of other 200 hr machines (one of which looked like ****) and I have no idea if they were maintained. Both the salesman and a tech spoke separately about the owner's advanced age and likelihood of him running any equipment hard and fast. Thanks also to Jeff9366 for the dealer referral. It was worth the drive. I'll update the post when I pick it up in a week or two.

The thing that surprises me about the oil is that the dealership didn't drop the oil as soon as the tractor came on the lot, before they ever showed it. I'm glad they were honest about it which is far far more than many would be. Dealers and private parties alike.

I'm one that changes according to hour use and mileage. I pretty much put those hours on every season anyway. But I don't lose sleep if my tractor goes 16-18 months between the change if the hours weren't used.

While it would have been better to change the oil at 50 hours, or after a year or so, if the oil hasn't been diluted with water, and the filter is doing its job, it should be fine. If the tractor was 18 months old, and had 70 hours, we wouldn't be having this discussion, so sitting for a couple years without being used might not hurt anything. Heck, change the oil, and change it again after another 50 hours, if it makes you feel better. If it runs fine, it probably isn't damaged.
