Cut Height Changes by Itself

Anybody have problems with the cut height adjustment changing all by its ownself?

My Son told me it kept changing on him. When I used the tractor the next time I kept an eye on it. It only did it twice for me and seemed like it was only after I raised the deck momentarily with the hydraulic control to clear some high spots and avoid scalping.

Another question. Should the knob index on the "points" or on the flat side of the pie shaped wedge with the number in it? In other words, should it stop on the line inbetween say 2 and 2.5, or stop in the middle of the 2.5? Mine wants to stop more on the lines.

Oh yeah, sorry, I have a BX 2230.

I have a BX2200 w/ a 60" mmm, mine "clicks"/"locks" in on the flats. and I can't say it has ever moved on its own in the 110 hours that I put on it

My 2230 has positive " clicks " also and stops sorta between the numbers, with the number to the right being the cutting height. Are you saying that the dial changes position? I have never heard of that happening, but anything is poss. Hey, aren't you the guy with the "rust bucket?"

Yup, that's me. Maybe that's the problem. Maybe that's one part that didn't rust yet and is still too slick and smooth to stay put, ha, ha.

Yes, mine works just like you described with the "kinda" clicks and stopping between numbers. It has changed by itself though at least twice for me and I don't know how many times for my Son.

When it did it for me it went lower, which is what you'd expect I guess due to gravity and all. Like I said, when it did it for me, it seemed to be right after I had lifted the deck to clear an obstacle. I didn't touch the adjustment knob.

I used to have this happen all the time.
My yard is fairly bumpy, and I think if I get going too fast and the deck starts bouncing around a bunch, the height will change. Unfortunately, I usually wouldn't realize it until I'd scalped the yard for a couple laps.
My solution has been to always tighten the "drop rate" knob next to the deck height knob. This way, if the height knob should change, the deck will be 'locked' at the height you really want. Interestingly, ever since I've started tightening the "drop rate" knob I've never had the deck height setting change.
You may also want to check that you don't have the gage wheels too low also.

Hey, I was just thinking after Rainbow's post above, maybe I should change my handle to "Rust Bucket" ha, ha.

Good idea on tightening up the drop rate knob. I'll give that a try. My yard is pretty bumpy too, but I usually mow at a speed that doesn't cause the equipment to get bounced around.

My wheels are set with a 1/2" clearance under them just like the book says.

I'm sure you guys will get me educated on this thing before too long. Thanks.

Hi "rustbucket" my new Bx2230's knob works just like yours'. Sometimes it aggravates the hell out of me. Also My cutting height is 1/2 inch less than what the dial is showing when I measure the blades off the concrete.

If you have the 5' deck the wheels are set according to the cutting height, and so far for me the wheels have prevented any scalping in my yard.

If you have the 5' deck then it is self-leveling. Page 15 in your manual shows that you adjust the wheels differently for each cutting height. If this is the case and you leave the wheels the same all the time it may account for the difference you mentioned. If not then, hey, who knows.
