cut off storage

Hi guys,

Just wondering does anyone have an ingenious way of storing scrap cut offs rather than throwing them into a box. used to have all mine lined up in rows but after rummaging through it a few times it turns into a mess again. I was thinking of maybe just setting up a few different boxes for each type, box round , angle etc. Just wanted to ask the question before doing anything. These bits of scrap come in very handy when ur making things up as you go along

Ronan I use those plastic milk crates side by side and you can stack them. I use them for elect parts,PVC fittings,rope-chains on and on. jd

I store all my scrap cut off at the DUMP....

MrJimi is building a metal rack (out of metal) that you might take a look at. You could put some expanded metal across some of the arms to hold smaller pieces like you have shown. Or just toss them in a barrel, if they are long enough they will stand up for easy retrieval, if not, cut one barrel in half for shorter pieces.

This idea is maybe really dumb. Hw about drilling a hole and use S hooks to hook them onto a chain? Kind of like an old fashioned laundry on the clothesline look. It ould be ral handy to see your pices suspended, you could check the sizes very easily.

I mounted a piece of angle diagonally on the wall and welded some 1 foot pieces sticking out from that.Stand em up long to short.

5 gallon paint buckets. One for each shape of metal. I keep my stainless and aluminum separate from my steel as well. Works great for me. I value my scrap metal and keep it out of the weather as well. Saves a lot of de-rusting labor and chemicals.

I don't have a pic to show you but here is how I store mine. I welded a box shaped frame out of some old cattle panel pieces. It is about 1 foot deep by 1.5 high and 1.5 wide. It has a solid bottom of scrap metal on it but the rest of it is open. I have several layers of the material going sideways at different levels so that a piece stuck down through the openings in the top do not slide to the side.

If you were to go to Home Depot and look at how they store their expensive cut pieces of metal, this idea is similar to that. This may seem more effort that it is worth but I can easily find any piece in my stack and get at it without the entire stack falling down after I take it out (or try to put it back).

I tinker with welding all the time so this was worth my effort and time.

Morning, like BTDT mentioned I am building a rack to store long metal and shorts will go on plywood base of mobile cart so I can moved it out of my way
