Good Morning all!

A lot of you know I had a house moved off my land and left with a mess of tree's and brick. The brick I have found uses for. The trees I might have a use for. I probably have enough of the same size diameter as a store bought 8' corner post to make plenty of corner and line "H" structures in between the tPosts for tghtening the solid wire. Most of these are pine with some hardwood. I need to expand my pasture fencing and was thinking of cutting the trees to length and using them to build my "H" corners and lines.

Can I do this?
Will they hold up to the strain of the ratchet tighteners?
If I can use them I am sure I would need to coat them with something? What would it be and where can I get it?

Thanks
Wade

If you have locust trees that would work. I'd pass up the pines.

If you have enough for a load and a trailer you might be able to sell them to a local mill. I see more and more people hauling small loads in now.

Just curious - what use did you find for the bricks?

Not exactly sure about your climate. Im from NE Texas and those pine poles wouldnt last 2 seasons here. Bois de' arc is the best option for us. No need spending the time, money and effort to build those braces out of somthing that wont last at least 50 years. My opinion.

Treating the pine might be an option after peeling. IF you have a treatment plant close by. The old days they BURNT the intended buried ends and then coated with chimney drippings and tar. Like others said it may be easier to buy the pre-treated poles and or use better woods.

I'd forget about the pine as well BUT if you have to use them you can wrap a piece of tar paper around the post where it contacts the ground and it will add some life to the post. Capping the top to cover the end grain also helps. You can also just put the ground end of the post into a plastic garbage bag before it goes into the hole and that helps as well.

The latest issue of Independent Sawmill and Woodlot management magazine had an article about doing your own wood treatment. Kinda interesting but I think I will just buy PT that I need.

You might call your local utility company and ask about used poles. I did so about 8 years ago and a foreman led me out into the country to a pile of 7 older treated poles that were still plenty sound for fence posts- he simply asked that I take ALL of them and leave nothing behind. I was happy to saw them up and come home with 20 or so "free" fence posts and he was happy that he didn't have to have a crew pick up and haul off the poles.
