When I was talking to the dealer about which rough cutter to get he steered me towards the Montana 6ft cutter with the shear pin. When I asked about the slip clutch type he said they were heavier and I would have to go with a 5ft with the slip clutch.

Does that sound like sound advice, or does he have a bunch of 6ft Montana cutters with shear pins to unload?

BTW, the tractor is a 4540.

sorry, i responded to your post but didn't read it carefully.
Your dealer my be going by the factory " minimum HP requirements". I've found them to a bit high.

The 4540 has a lift capacity of over 3K lbs at the ball ends. According to the Montana website the slip clutch 6' only weighs 780 pounds. I would think you should be fine. For what it is worth the cutter that they show on the web site is EXACTLY like the 6' Gearmore that I purchased which I believe to be a King Kutter.

72" with a slip clutch will run all day long on a 4540, no problem at all. It will cut even very dense stuff easily. The pto hp is what you need to consider and the 4540 has more than enough at the pto to run a 72" with a slip clutch.

As Slacker said, maybe the dealer is going by some factory recommended but from actual use, go with the 72" w/slip clutch.

You will have no problem handling the 6' unit with your tractor. The slip clutch models are significantly superior to the shear bolt types, and will have much less down-time hassle. My Montana 3644 HST can even handle my 7' Howse as long as the going is not too thick or steep.

Hmmm, maybe Monday I'll find out exactly which slip-clutch models they have and how much.

I bought the Montana 7' HD with a slip clutch. It is actually a King Kutter painted green. At this link: http://www.kingkutter.com/WholeGood.asp?item=HeavyDutyKutter it is the one on top with the dual rear wheels.

I pull it behind my 5740 and it will cut anything. I can go through thick 5' tall johnson grass and it doesn't even bag down.

When I bought min 30 months ago it was a bargain and much cheaper than the King Kutter model. I think they have gone up since then. Everyone I know that has shear pins tells me they wish they had a slip clutch.

I pull a 7' HD Howse with slip clutch behind my 4940C through some pretty high stuff with no problems.
I echo the sentiments about slip clutch over shear pins.
Shear pins belong on outboard motor propellers.......

AGREE 100% on the Slip clutch especially with the Elctro-Hydro engagement that could possible break a shear pin.

You may want to consider contacting Tennessee River Implement at 423-334-9669 very nice folks, and when I proced thier new green 6-8 foot models was less expensive than used models I was looking at. Good luck

Well I decided to go slip clutch after reading all these posts. They carry the Modern 5 or 6ft Super Sunshine w/slip clutch so I'll probably get that.
