I have some really tall thick field grass that I need to cut and wonder if it is acceptable to run the mower deck in the "top" position, or even in the "full up"" position, which is even higher than the "top" position? It seems ok, but want to make sure this is an OK practice.

I do that sometimes and never had a problem. It looks like running with the mower deck higher causes less offset in the PTO shaft, which could be a positive rather than a negative.

I have done it for a few acres at a time, after being out of town for a month in May, when the grass grows fast.

I don't expect you will experience any problems. I never have…

I don't know how to edit using the iPhone app so I will try a second post.

Your say really high and thick grass. I'm not sure what that means. In my case the grass was perhaps 12 inches high, with other things sticking up maybe 18 inches. But these higher thing were not that frequent.

I have a brush hog for my larger tractor and if I were cutting something that I would consider really high and thick, I would use the brush hog first. But that would have to be higher than 12 inches…

Even at 12 inches I had to cut three or four times before things started to come under control again…seems like there is more time spent "cutting the cuttings" than cutting the grass.

I mow our hill every fall for the neighborhood kids to use for sledding. I make a pass with the deck almost at the top, then turn around and make another pass a little lower. For this, I'm not concerned about the cut quality, but there have been no problems with this. It does allow me to see any pocket gopher mounds before I actually hit them, too.
