I may have to cut 1/2 inch off the threaded end of a cyl.
is there anything special I need to worry about? or just whack it off? I think my air cut off tool will cut it but was wondering about a sawzall with a tungsten carbide blade.
This is not on a tractor its on a big paper cutter.

I have cut several down and used a 4 1/2" angle grinder w/cutting disk. I did extend the rod out as far as I could just to make sure there was no heat transfer to any of the seals. No problems whatsoever.
I have never used a tungston blade in my sawzall so I dont know how it would do but I can tell you, the rods I have cut were very hard. I don't think a regular metal cutting blade would touch them.

Most rods have a surface hardening of less than 1/10". The cutting of the threads will remove any hardening. The rod acts as such a heat sink that you will not overheat the seals. Your saw-zall should cut it okay. You will sweat a little, :) but it will cut. My choices for cutting this would be, in order of choice, portable band saw, then 4 1/2" grinder with cutting wheel, saw-zall, hack saw, dull butterknife.

FIREMAN:

I have cut several of these as I have modified several donor tie rod
cylinders. Since the rods seem to be chromed, or at least had hard
surfaces, there was no way I was going to risk damaging the bi-metal
blade in my horizontal bandsaw. The bandsaw does give the best cut.
I have used my plasma cutter, but that does not leave the best finish
as the rods I cut are over an inch thick. The last three I cut with my
cheapo HF 14" abrasive cutoff saw. Since this saw is for light duty use,
I just cut gradually from all sides until I got through. Works fine and
no blades were sacrificed.
