I put a top & tilt remote system on my L3400 but am having some disappointment with the tilt part.

The tilt will not hold more than a few minutes before my box blade or brush hog is tilted over. The control junction originally had a couple of loose hose fittings which I've tighten up. Then the side cylinder showed some fluid leakage, so BARECO (Surplus Center) replaced the cylinder. Now there is no sign of fluid leaks, but it still tilts over after only a few minutes. I have to keep tweaking the lever to keep my attachment level.

Do I need some sort of check valve for it to hold the angle? Or what would you suggest is my problem.

Thanks,

Jim

Do you have quick disconnects on the lines going to the cylinders?
If so, I would pick the implement up and disconnect the lines leading to the cylinders. If it stays up, the problem is the valve. If it leaks down with both lines disconnected, the problem is a bad cylinder.

The only sure way to stop the cylinder from leaking down is to get one that has a DPOCV (double pilot operated check valve) on it like the ones CCM sells. Do a search for these terms for hours of reading;):

dpocv

yep KennyD - good reading on the DPOCV! Way more than I can understand in one setting. But, I'm sure I don't have that, and am checking to see what's involved in adding it. Otherwise, the tilt feature is useless.

I really appreciate your reply.

Mark at CCM will sell the valves by themselves, Rob (username 3RRL if you search) got some and added them to his backhoe IIRC. Unfortunatly there does not seem to be any others that will work well because of their large size.

Here is one the Surplus Center sells https://www.surpluscenter.com/item.asp?item=9-5606-50&catname=hydraulic , it's big and expensive-in the end it may just pay to get a new cylinder from Mark that already has one installed.

yes, it would have been cheaper up front to have simply bought the cylinder with the DPOCV. But I've already bought & installed the cylinder from Surplus Center. I do want to point out that Conrad with Surplus Center immediately responded to my email inquiring about DPOCV's and furnished the part number, etc. within 30 minutes.

It's certainly great to have people like you, KennyD, and others to offer good advice, and for supporters like Surplus Center to be so helpful. Thanks a million!

If the seals on the cylinder are bad, the DPOCV will not help. That is a big IF, though. Most likely your valve is leaking. There is no 100% sure fire this it fix. Your best bet is probably the DPOCV though. The leak down seems to be most noticeable with 2" cylinders because of the smaller volume.

Just my experience.

Assuming you have a single rod double acting cylinder - then even with no piston seals you will not get significant cylinder movement unless the rod seal or valve leaks. This is due to the fact that the rod and base end of the cylinder have different areas. As a cylinder extends the total volume of oil contained in the cylinder grows, so the oil would need to expand for the cylinder to extend And conversely the oil would need to compress for the cylinder to retract.

Also, another solution in place of the DPOCV (double pilot operated check valve) is a counterbalance valve.
