D170 with failing K46 transmission, now what

If you look closer, (tractordata website) JD X3XXs are still using hydros that have the same displacements as K46/T40J. Their differences are in higher gear reduction, better steel gears versus powder metal gears as in K46/T40J. You can make K46 pull stronger by .... using smaller tires. By doing that you sacrifice in rolling resistance and traction but gain pulling force.

And they are seal units as well.

I've been following everything & anything about the K46 and it's potential to crap out. I have one in my L120. Mine has 560 hours on it and still feels strong. It seems some were mfg cheep and these are the ones failing. The others (millions) were mfg with better quality and better mach tolerances.

I don't believe the L-series or any of the other series are junk tractors as some want to boost thier's is better la la la who gives a $h!t. We all just wanted something affordable that would cut the lawn & not used 24/7 to plow/push cow crap all day. Then there's the weirdo's who say buy a $10k tractor you don't need instead of repairing your's for $600. This logic is BS. I'm going to fix mine until it absolutely falls apart. I'll proudly mow my yard every week using my L120. YOU can proudly make tractor payments every month to be be the hot shot.

I find it fun as heck to search parts and discover ways to soup-up or hot-rod my L120.

Read somewhere a guy stuffed a K71 in his L130. The K71 is a much better trans than the K66. There was some linkage mods to be made but it worked. There is one model# of the K66 that has differential lock. Diff lock appears to be a kit or extra parts put into the K66 to include a shift-dog and a spring along with some other little parts that make it a diff lock tranny. Interesting enough, if you need diff lock, you could always weld the diff gears together, but I'm not thrilled about jury-rigg'n shtuff. It has to be right.

Yesterday, I found a JD 130 that has a DANA 5-speed manual transmission. Now there's a solution to all this hydro trans failure. The shift lever looks like it would work on my L120 to look like it belongs there. This is important for me. Nothing needs to look rigged, but solid. Wonder how power is let off the tranny to full stop or change gears? Curious...

On an L,LA,& D series the tension is relieved from the belt when the clutch /brake is activated. So yes, you could put a manual transmission. L100s had a manual though it wasn't very heavy duty.
