Bought a club car utility vehicle that had a issue with the Kubota diesel engine ( D722)
When I bought the UTV the engine would only turn by hand 3/4 of a revolution in either direction. I thought it had spun a rod bearing because when I pulled the pan off I could see some bluing around the area where the crank and the rod cap meet. I don't know if that was normal or not? So I pulled the rod caps one at a time. The rod bearings and the crank surface look like new! BTW the engine only has 306 hours on it.
I then pulled the head off to find that the #1 piston was caked with what looked like seeds. Possible that a small mouse started a nest in the #1 cylinder while the UTV was sitting. I don't have any past history of the UTV, so im not sure how long it sat. So now I know WHY the engine would not turn 360*. BUT while dropping the pan I found a sliver of metal. It's somewhat smooth on one side and VERY rough on the other side...almost like rusty sand paper on one side. I'm not sure if it's bearing material or part of a thrust washer? I've attached pictures of the piece of metal that I found in the pan. Also attached photos of what was found in #1 cylinder.....I had already started to clean it up before I took pictures.
I cut the oil filter apart to check for metal, I didn't find any.....so do you guys suggest tearing further into the motor to find where the sliver of metal came from? Or put it back together and try to see if it runs? I've never taken apart a Kubota diesel before (only 5.9 & 6.7 cummins engines). Very unsure of how the crank comes out. I can tell it comes out the back of the block but that's about it. Looks like the mains are tied into the block which is new to me.
