Dad\'s 2nd childhood project for the love of my life(my kids)
Having several acres of vacant former hayfield going unused behind my shop and being tired of brush hogging it all the time , I decided to build something to reward my kids ( boy 7 and girl 6 ) for their help around the house and yard. I got out my TC40D with trusty boxblade (rippers in lowest position) and created for my kids something I always wanted as a kid myself ( I'm 45) a kart track. After tearing up the sod and topsoil 4 lanes wide in 2 directions. I got out my 7' grader blade and started making laps until I finished the track seen in the attachment. It has 18" banking on the turns and 2 straight away's and measures 1/8 mile. I bought a small kart for my daughter to learn her driving skills in at TSC. It looks like a 2 wheel hand cart that fell over and someone put a steering axel and motor on. Came with a roll cage and side padded seat with belt and shoulder harness. Full live axel and torque converter drive and top speed of 6 mph. I felt that this was a much safer approach than a dirtbike or 4 wheeler due to the more enclosed nature of the kart. Cost new was only $499........I purchased 2 larger karts (2 seaters for dad and son) new helmets and goggles and we were in the racing business !! My kids mean the world to me and this was a way I could give them some fun while controlling the situation. The karts and track are not a gift to them they remain "DADS" and they know they are a "privilege" and a reward for being responible members of our family and doing what I ask of them. My daughter spent a couple afternoons honing her driving skills in the little kart and then I took her a ride in the bigger 2 seater kart. She asked if she could drive the big cart so I moved the seat up and cranked the governor screw in so it would limit out at 10 mph or less. After observing her make a few careful laps , she waved for me to come over to her. She asked me if I would ride along with her while she drove me around. The look on her face when she drove "Her Dad" around (instead of dad driving her around everywhere for the past six years) was priceless.............Talk about precious seat time !! We have a few of their friends over for a couple hours on the weekends and so far it's all they talk about. I hope I never grow up!!!! TOM
