My dad purchased 8n afew months ago, issues started there. First experience with tractor even though somewhat knowledgable with automotives. Tractor would start run about a minute then shut off. Battery weak , found bad alternator. 12 volt conversion with front end distributor w/reducer block. Replaced alt then tractor started and ran three times for min each then lost spark. Found loose wire regained spark but still will not crank. Do you think fuel may be an issue? Gas is getting to carb at fuel line to carb. Thanks in advance to anyone who can help!!!! First time user and member THANKS.

Imediately when it dies, check the spark by pulling a plugwire out, putting a pape clip in the boot so it touches the conductor, hold it near a good ground and try a start. You should see a FAT,BLUISh-WHITE SPARK, the color of lightning. If you have that, then the ignition system is mostl likely OK. If you don't you need to find out why. You say it's a 12v conversion. Has that goofy front mount disributor/coil system been converted to a 12V coil or have the correct resistors been added to reduce the coil current to the old coil? I don't know what the limiting current is on tht coil but if you go to the 8N forum on Yesterdays Tractors, there'a a ton of guys there that can help you. Tell them Jerry/MT sent you.

Sounds like you haven't gotten to the next level of frustration. I had a 1952 8N that while working it, if I stalled it out, you might as well walk in and have lunch while the tractor cools down because it would NEVER re-start for at least a half hour. I checked everything possible and could find nothing wrong with it. Even had a couple of Model A guys go over it. Finally sold it and bought a new NH TC40 and have never looked back. My shoulders are pretty bad and the joy of power steering put fun back into the tractor equation.

won't crank and you think it is a fuel issue???

start back over and check the bat, terminal ends, wires and grouding point at the chassie.. then trouble shoot the starter.. if it's a solenoid.. replace with the saem solenoid and inthe same orientation, if you are using the oem 3 post safety interlocked solenoid and tranny thumb switch.

once you get her cranking.. check spark... if it has good spark, move on to fuel.

running for a minute thn dieing can be fuel starvation ( stuck float or obstruction ).. OR a bad condensor.. so at stall .. recheck spark.

post back.

I would check the settling bowl on the outlet of the gas tank. Take it off and wipe it out. My NAA did the same thing.Crud would drain from the tank into the bowl and restrict the fuel flow. Finally had to get a new gas tank.

Good luck,
