Every small engine I have worked on, the valve seal slips over the "stem" on the valve, the valve has to be dropped and the keepers removed to do this. Otherwise it is a very simple matter of slipping on the new seal. It could be a broken ring as well and that would be more costly. I overhauled a 17 hp Kohler this past winter, total cost was around $250. I ground the valves at the same time, my brother has a valve grinding set up so that didn't cost me anything.

Theory on seal failure.
My friend who believes it's the valve seals talked to me today and he has a theory on why they failed. His idea is if the mower the sat around unused the seals might have dried out and cracked. I was told the first owner liked his toys and bought whatever caught his eye. Weather he needed it or not. So it's possible the mower sat for a while between uses or when I bought it. Any ideas on how long it would take a seal to dry out? I would think years.

billbill1. I am pretty well convinced it is the valves. If not, there will be some crying involved.

Would this cause a continuing problem or just after dumping in the oil? I don't know how fast my guy was putting in the oil but I plan to ask.

I demoed a Farris once and they seem like a good machine. I tried it out on the roughest yard I had. A real washboard. That suspension system really works. I would recommend them and the Scags to anyone. I went with the Gravely's because I felt they were a better value and the dealer was close.

Does your neighbor use any stand on mower's? That's the direction I'm going now. I demoed Toro, Wright, Everride, and am going to Louisville Thursday to check out the new Scags.

No, all sit down. I have a boating buddy named Art who owns a large landscape company. I mean big. Just bough 8 brand new F-250's an 2 F-350's all with plows this summer if that gives you a idea. Anyway he runs nothing but Toro. He swears by them.
