Oil & Fuel Daily amount of diesel for a 2440??

My 2440 is using about 8 gallons a day(in about 6 actual hours) when pulling my disk harrow at moderately low rpm and the tractor has a very minor leak around the fuel filter. The tractor is new to me and haven't had time to operate it but 12 hours, much less had time to perform any repairs Is this too much fuel being burned and can anyone help me understand how the hours(4519 hrs) on my gauge relates to actual hours of operation?

If you are burning about 1.3 gals/hr pulling a disk at moderate speeds I think you are OK. I would address the fuel leaks as they are not going away as soon as you can. At full load you could burn about 3 to 4 gals/hr.

The tach/hour meter registers hours at full speed or pto speed, so if you are running at half speed it takes two hours to register an hours use. If you have an external hour meter driven by 12 volts then it reads time the ignition switch is on without speed consideration. Without a crystal ball no one can tell you how the hours were aquired.

Neither method of recording hours will tell you much, more important is to make sure the engine is in good shape. The good thing about your engine as opposed to most of the newer ones is it is wet sleeved and can be rebuilt with new pistons and liners and be made like new. Not suggesting that your tractor needs this though.

I think you just need to spend some quality time with your machine, check the oil and keep an eye on the guages.

Thank you very much! That makes complete sense. I've put together a maintenance log w/ a schedule of necessary steps and started w/ an oil change and check the fluids daily, as well as grease all fittings once a week .I had the hydraulic filter changed last week by the dealer that sold me the tractor and had him replace all the 3-pt and pto seals while the fluid was out. My hope was to get a couple of months of work done and bring the tractor to the house(about an hour from the farm) and begin restoring the tractor. I'm like a little kid at Christmas w/ my JD.
