There must be a better way to attach the shaft from the mower to the PTO. Each Spring when I service my deck and attach it to the tractor it is a painful ritual until I can get the dang thing to connect.
For one, the the collar that slips back never stays in the back position...each time I pull it back it snaps forward before I can align the splines and I have to do it over and over again. All of a sudden it seems to line up and I can push it onto the shaft but even that doesn稚 go easy and I end up tapping it with a hammer to lock into place. All the while on my side on the garage floor and only able to reach in with one arm...Very frustrating.
Rant over.

Try it from the back end of the tractor. It worked better for me

It takes practice. Unfortunately, when you only do it once a year you don't get much practice. I'm able to hold the collar back with my fingers whilst sliding it onto the spline....but sometimes it takes me fifteen minutes, other times I slide it right on. It is a one-handed operation, and you're right, you lay on your side to boot. I always put it on before attaching the mower to the tractor which gives me a tad more room to work with. Engage the PTO so it won't turn. I've never had to tap it with a hammer into place, perhaps you need some lube there.

Never been a big deal for me, takes maybe 30 seconds. If it doesn’t go right away rotate it a little bit.

Practice!!

Many years ago I was thinking, I was wondering what engineer thought this was funny business....

Go to find out, it just took lots of practice. I can get mine on in 30 seconds blindfolded totally by feel.

In the Spring my backhoe is on until I need to mow so I知 putting the deck on with BH in place. No access from behind in this mode.

I grease the shaft and splines while servicing the deck...maybe less grease?

Yeah definitely no practice here it goes on once and off once however off is not a problem.

I have the same issue with my BX2200. I finally found out if I jack up the rear and remove the left rear tire/wheel, I have a LOT more room to work. Overall, this is much faster than my hunt and guess method. With the wheel off, you can actually SEE what you are doing and have more room to work.

The easiest way I've found is to pull the deck in from the right side but not all the way into the on position. It gives me more room to put the shaft onto the pto . You almost have to find the right spot because if you don't have it under far enough you end up pulling the shafts apart and then its a pain to put that part back together.
