I was replacing the headlights in my 1997 F350 PSD (OBS) and I found a ground connection just hanging there that I hadn't noticed before.
This is on the left side - driver's side - of the truck. It's not the main heavy ground which goes to the block, and it's not the small ground that goes forward - it's connected at the negative terminal cable bolt and is about 24 inches long.

Where is this supposed to be connected to?
The truck seemed to run fine with it dangling, but now that I know it was dangling, I don't like it.

That’s an aftermarket add-on for something else. Been working on electrical on vehicles since 1992 and the previous owner should have taken it off so you can definitely unbolt it & discard.

I bought it new; there's never been anything aftermarket there that I know of.

Trust me, that isn’t factory wiring. Notice the connection to the battery terminal.

That other cable on the ground clamp bolt is not OE neither, or at least not one I've ever seen. Where is the other end connected?. Could you rig have had an auxiliary battery at one time, winch, power tailgate?............Mike

As I read it, the OP's truck has dual batteries stock from the factory (it is a Diesel), so a 3rd battery wouldn't make much sense.

The nerve of pranksters who add wires to trucks while owners sleep.

That is not factory. Maybe in the past 21 years you did something or had something on there you don’t remember? Maybe had it worked on by someone who for some unknown reason put the wire there?

Trace the wire back, what is is connected to?

I had a mechanic one time just run a new ground wire next to the old one and left the old one there. It did the job, just not a clean job by any means.
