John Deere 5105
Hi,
I inherited an old John Deere 5105 when we bought a house and acreage a year ago. I've read the manual and used it several times to bush hog and drag logs. I'm not as familiar with it as I'd like to be, though.
Recently I noticed what appeared to be exhaust coming out of an open-ended hose running down the right side of the engine. I can't figure out if it's broken off from where it should be attached or if it's supposed to be that way. On further investigation I found another open-ended hose running down the left side of the engine towards the front.
Photos are here and here. Can anyone identify these hoses and tell me if I have a problem?

Thanks,

Luke

Follow hoses back to where they originate from.
They don't look like they aren't suppose to be there. Looks like a breather hose on right side and radiator overflow on left, but I'm just guessing. I think my tractor is a later model of the 5105, so I'll take a closer look and report back.
John deere parts website have good diagrams of all components.

Coby is correct. Hose on RH side is engine blow by vent. No issue there unless there is an excessive amount of blow by or smells like exhaust. Hose on LH side is radiator overflow. No issue there unless it is constantly dripping coolant. Enjoy your new toy...er...tool.:drink:

In the first picture, follow the hose and see if it connects to the top of the valve cover, if yes it is the breather hose. I have included a link to JDparts that you can look it up. In the second picture that hose (bottom left corner) looks to be the radiator overflow hose.

If you need an online link to operators manual go to this site:
John Deere Ag - New Equipment: Technical Publications - Equipment Search

If you plan to replace the fuel filter, fill it up before you put it on and have a full tank of fuel and most likely you will not need to bleed it in order to start it up.

Take a look at this site and based on the serial number you will be able to determine what year it is.

2WD or 4WD? If 4WD and it is a hard to get in/out of 4WD, with the clutch in and just a little rolling (forward or back) it will go right in/out.

Thanks for the quick replies, everybody. I'll see if the hoses come from the valve cover and the radiator.
Also, thanks for the links. I had found them previously, but the parts catalog sure is hard to use. I couldn't find overall picture of the engine with all the parts labeled.
