Yep, that's it. The top and bottom nuts on the unit hold it togehter and sealed. However the nuts are just like acorn lug nuts with a tapered metal surface to seal against another metal surface. No gasket or anything and the surfaves are definately not precision machined.

Also the Street ell above the reg is pot metal and broke into 3 pieces when I snugged it up to try and fix a leak.

It is now a disposable use item, if the filter plugs up it gets thrown away, because the ends are JB Welded on /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

This is one of the few things I have not been satisfied at HF with.

Wow. I'm definitely the complete opposite. It is the rare item from HF that I don't consider complete junk. Only the few name brand items that I've bought there are still in my posession. Most items I've purchased there have not even survived a one time use! /forums/images/graemlins/mad.gif I'm more than convinced that Harbor Fright is the lower end hardware side of Big Lots.

I got one of there $98 air compressors, just what I needed, works good except the cutoff switch drains the air tank when it shuts off.
So far have not been able to fix it.

Should be a one-way valve in the line from the compressor to the tank. See if it isn't stuck open or missing...

Dargo,
I do not buy the stuff that is obviously junk. But have had good luck with thier welding grinders, rotozip tool, air tools, etc.
Their sliding compound miter saw has such rough slide bearings that I don't believe it would saw very straight. Found a smooth working one at Big lots though for less a /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif $69.00. Used the heck out of it for close to 1 year now and it is still cutting good.
I would rather buy high grade tools, but at their prices would only have one or two in my whole shop.

Hi Ben,

Too late, yep that's the filter I just bought. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif After reading your post I pulled it apart. It had some sort of sealant on the nuts and may not have leaked if I hadn't taken it apart, ya right. You are spot on about this being a poor design, no way is it going to seal if I put it back together.

Came up with a fix after thinking about it a bit. Made a couple of tapered copper washers using copper tubing and a flair tool. After I flared the end of the tubing I left it in the holder, used a drill press and ran a 1/2 inch step drill down the inside of the tubing. This cut the flair off the tubing and left a tapered copper washer that just fits over the stud holding the thing together. Cranked down on the nuts and no leaks, at least now I can use it and it was a pretty easy fix.
