CC Z Force 48
Purchased a used Z-Force 48 today and found that the hour meter is locked at 201.1 hours. Pulled the unit out of its housing and found two strange things.

One, the wire feeding the hour meter was cut about 12 inches away from the hour meter. There is no indication anywhere as to where this was wired into the electrical system. What does the meter feed off of?

Two, the hour meter has only the one electrical connection? How does this thing run with only 1 electrical hookup? No ground? Does it run on induction or impulse somehow? Anyone else come across this before?

prolly one of those items with an internal battery - with that one lead wrapping around a spark plug wire to sense both/either engine RPM/running...
See if there are any markings on the hourmeter - do a google search on that - may get lucky with some detailed info.

The hourmeter just runs when the key is turned on. If you leave the key on even without the engine running it will just keep on counting. The wiring diagram shows it should have two wires one is connected to the PTO switch and the other to the ignition switch.

I forgot to mention the wiring diagram is for a Kohler powered machine with a model number starting with 53AA5B. If yours is a different model I might have to post a different diagram.

The hour meter stays powered up (so you can see the hours on it) all the time on my Z-Force and only counts when the ignition is on. This was different from my 2544, where you had to turn the ignition on for the display to go on.

So, you really don't know how many hours are on the machine. The cut wire was probably done on purpose to falsely give the impression that the machine only had low hours.

Gentlemen,
The mystery is solved. The story on this Z-Force 48 is that the original 22 HP B&S motor blew up and was replaced with a new 26 HP B&G, which is presently on it.

I have the original Owner's Manual for the tractor and curiously the wiring diagram in the manual does not show an hour meter at all. So being at a loss, I cornered a technician at the local Case dealership and determined that the hour meter runs on an impulse charge from a spark plug. So, when the engine was changed by the previous owner, it simply was not hooked back up, I suspect.

Anyway, I lengthened the wire and zip tied it to a spark plug wire and its again marking off the hours to the next oil change.

Thanks to all who jumped in to try and solve my dilemma!

Your hour meter there either has a metal housing case cover ground, or else the ground wire was ripped out forcefully, and that missing grd wire was physically ripped out of the sealed hour meter body case cover itself - which may or may not be made out of metal.

The 1 wire you have showing there is no doubt RED in color - hopefully? If it's BLACK or GREEN then the HOT (Magneto) wire was ripped out of the meter case for whatever reason.

Every electronic meter today has at least a 2-wire Battery Hot & Ground wire scheme whether or not the Batt Hot is key switched or not . Has to - otherwise the meter won't work.

Some gauge meters might even have a 3rd or 4th wire scheme as well - beings a SENSE and/or a keyed IGN wire scheme - just depends on the type meter and it's lighting/switched scheme.

Also depends on the meter design if it's using an inductive type SENSE pickup signal as well. Other then the BLUE wire (same as like on Marine apps) going to the Inst panel LIGHT switch, and the BLACK wire going directly to Grd, the only other wire(s) left are the HOT or RED WIRE which almost always goes to the IGN side of the Key Switch, and most likely in your tractor case (if it's an older design) that goes to the Magneto. The Grd wire always goes to a good Batt return Grd point anywhere on the tractor.

When you buy used stuff - esp junk off Ebay - you are taking a "Pig in a Poke" chance.

Does your meter have a replaceable 12-volt light bulb socket in the back? If it does then it has to have an external Grd somewhere. If it's a Super Bright White LED type backlight then it may be taking it's Grd internally from the meter itself. In either case there still needs to be a good Batt Grd return for the hour meter.

If your meter there truly only has the 1 wire (RED or GREEN/BLACK) coming out of the sealed meter case (usually comes thru a rubber type wiring seal grommet), and the meter case is non-metal (in other words a plastic case) - then you only have one option left, and that is to physically pry open the meter case and re-establish (resolder) either a good HOT wire or Grd point inside. That is - If you are capable of doing that without destroying the case? I've done it before for people, but again I am me, and you are you, and I know I can do it, but I don't know if you can.

If the meter has a metal face ring that might be a good Grd point. Only way to check it is by hooking up the (hopefully RED lead) to Batt + and touching the metal face ring to Batt Grd to see if it even fires up or its motor runs. If it's an inductive type meter scheme (ie Magneto type), and there only is a RED wire present with the metal face ring being Grd - then you might have to hook it up to the running tractor's Magneto point to see if it truly works. It may very well be that you wasted money on this possible "AS IS" Ebay buy there? Did you get it off Ebay? If you did, and there were only shaddy looking pix of the meter at best - then I would have passed on that USED deal. Sometimes a pix says it all.

Hope that helps - let me know?

Frank

Thanks for all of the information, although you can see that I was able to get the problem fixed. I see by the times of your post and mine, that you were typing yours up at the time I posted my results. Thanks again for taking the time to reply!

It sure is nice to know that people are out there to help. I follow 12 forums, one each for all of my antique cars, daily drivers, tow vehicles, and garden equipment, and I can tell you that there are a great many forums that go weeks before someone takes the time to even attempt an answer. Most frustrating, but that obviously is not the case here. Thanks everyone!
