In past week, two dealers have suggested that in Feb 2006 JD will offer either shuttle shift (power reverser) feature on the JD 790/990 series....

Does anyone out there know if this is correct?

I don't know about the power reverser, but I have heard there will be a hydrostatic model. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Shuttle shift - I'm a newbie here so this might be a silly question. Is that a shift on the go manual that requires clutching to shift from one forward gear to the other?

I think the 790 is a great machine and I have no problem with a manual but I'm not keen on needing to stop to shift - to be honest I don't have a clue as to whether I would really need it or not - being new to tractors in general.

This might bring the 790 back into the running for me - if I'd be able to shift on the go.

Shuttle shift as I know it gives you the ability to go from forward to reverse without stopping and depressing the clutch.

Ok... I decided to check with a local dealer here who showed me around the 3120 and 790. She said that there is a new 3003 series tractor that is planned for early 2006 - probably will not be out till March 06.

It will be like the 3000 twenty series but without the bells and whistles and will take the 300 loader. It will be hydrostatic.

The 790 and 990 will continue to be offerred.

I'm guessing JD has recognized that there is a market between the 2520 and 3120 that they are missing for a 30 odd hp machine but without all the goodies other than hydro.

She did not have pricing yet.

"Shuttle Shift" has been used to describe several different systems. All it seems to mean is that the manufacturer is claiming to have set up the design to facilitate direction change.

On some tractors (Deere's 5105/5205 for example) they simply aligned one forward range position and the reverse range position on the range selector so that switching between them was an in-line quick (and syncronized) tranny move. Still requires clutching.

More often it indicates a separate shuttle lever that sets motion direction for forward or reverse independent of the transmission gear or range selections. This can be...

a basic and rugged mechanical design that still requires clutching by the user (New Holland TC48 for example), or

a hydraulic control design that controls a hydraulic valve body that uses hydraulic power to do the shifting and does not require the user to do any clutching (Deere's Power Reverser and I believe New Holland's TC55 for examples), or

an electro-hydraulic system where the control lever is actually an electric switch that sends a signal to a solenoid controlling a hydraulic clutch (Deere's e-Power Reverser for example).

There's probably other variations out there as well.

I can only confirm a nearby dealer informs me that the 790 and the 990 will be offered with HST this spring. I find it highly unlikely that Deere will tool up to offer a power reverser shuttle shift on these models as well, but I've been wrong before.

Agco offers two manual tranny's with the shuttle feature. The 8 + 8 has 2 ranges, the 12 + 12 has 3. With either, you can shift between gears in the same direction and range just like an automotive manual. You cannot shift between ranges without stopping, or at least it isn't synchronized so you'd need to be quick and good to do it.

The 8 + 8 shuttle requires you to push the clutch in, the 12 + 12 does that for you hydraulically. The former is called the synchro shuttle and the latter is the power shuttle. I think the 4 speed box is the same for both, just with different transfer cases. You can go backwards just as fast as you can go forwards with either.

Deere's collar shift is a typical tractor gearbox. You pick your gear while motionless, let out the clutch and go. Shifting on the move is possible, but they didn't call them crashboxes back in the 30's without reason. The gears are not synchronized.

They also offer a synchronized box, a normal mechanically controlled hydro, and the electronically controlled hydro which opens up the door for all kinds of neat things if you trust the electronics and want to pay for it. Load match effectively slows the tractor and adjusts engine speed in response to the amount of work you ask the thing to do. The power reverser is an electronically controlled shuttle on the ehydro unit which allows you to choose between two different rates for slowing the tractor automatically as you run back and forth using the loader. Then all you need to do is move a little lever controlling the electronics.

The regular shuttle and the PowerShuttle on the larger 28 and up MF, Cat and AGCO are 16 speeds.
